They are the ones who knowingly accept that hundreds of people and more, die while fleeing each year. Moreover, they now demand that those of us operating in the Mediterranean to assist people in distress at sea, should cooperate with Libyan forces\u2014forces known for illegally returning asylum seekers to places where they face violence, torture, and death. They are trying to break us. They won\u2019t succeed. Solidarity always wins! What exactly happened? Well\u2026 On Thursday, September 10, 2026, we responded to a distress situation near the Bouri oil platform in international waters. Our crew rescued 20 people from an unseaworthy fiberglass boat. The individuals had already been at sea for at least two days and were suffering from life-threatening dehydration. Following coordination with the relevant Italian authorities, our crew brought all of them on board.<\/p>\n\n\n\n On September 23, 2026, Italian authorities imposed a 15-day detention of the Sea Punk I\u2014a period that has since elapsed\u2014along with a fine of 7,500 euros, based on the Piantedosi Decree. The Italian authorities accuse the captain of the Sea Punk I of failing to comply with instructions from the so-called Libyan Coast Guard to move away from the scene of a maritime emergency and leave the operational area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Regarding this, Stephen Schrezenmeier, our operations coordinator punk, states: \u201cDuring this rescue operation, there was no direct contact with the so-called Libyan Coast Guard. Furthermore, under international maritime law, Libya is not a \u2018place of safety\u2019; returning individuals there would be a violation of international law. There is an obligation to rescue people and bring them to a place of safety\u2014which is exactly what we did.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n We are filing an objection against the penalty assessment and the fine.
