It’s Pride Month, and we commemorate the Stonewall Uprising on June 28, 1969, in New York. A turning point in the fight for equal rights for the queer community, which courageously confronted the violence they faced and fought for human rights. Even today, queer people, especially trans, intersex, and non-binary people facing hate and persecution worldwide.
In the US, the rights of trans people are being rapidly dismantled; Russia has been persecuting queer advocacy as “propaganda” for years; Hungary banned Pride parades; and Great Britain recently denied trans women the right to equal treatment as women.
In Germany the number of violent acts against queer people is steadily rising – last year, almost every Pride parade in central Germany was attacked. Instead of showing solidarity, Bundestag President Julia Klöckner banned the raising of the rainbow flag at the Berlin Pride parade. Support for queer people is declared a political opinion, even it’s about people and their rights.
Persecution based on sexual orientation or gender identity is a recognized reason for asylum in Germany. However, not all people survive the attempt to flee their countries of origin. Added to this are lengthy and exhausting asylum procedures, inadequate healthcare, and sometimes further violence in mass accommodation facilities.
Seapunks and Trans-Inter-Aktiv in Mitteldeutschland stand in solidarity with the queer community in Germany and around the world and demand the same from German politicians!
QUEER LIVES MATTER! LEAVE NO ONE BEHIND!
Let’s be loud together!
